Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle touch manual therapy that works to soothe the central nervous system by releasing restrictions using the bones of the skull and spine. While most people are aware of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems of the body, many are not aware of the craniosacral system. The craniosacral system consists of the brain, spinal cord, cerebrospinal fluid (cushions the brain and spine), dura membrane (contains these structures) and the bones of the skull and spine. Much like the respiratory and cardiovascular system, the craniosacral system has its own rhythm which is palpated and measured by the practitioner. The rhythm is much more subtle and difficult to detect which is why it is not always considered in Western medicine. Practitioners use this rhythm which can be felt over the entire body to locate areas where it is less prominent, which are sites of restriction.
When a baby is born, the skull is made up of many separate bones that are not yet fused. Often times, through the birthing process, infections, or stress, these bones and the dural membrane can form restrictions causing abnormal function of the brain and nerves. Many syndromes and illnesses of childhood result from these restrictions, and when released can result in decreased or completely resolved symptoms. Colic, learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, dyslexia, motor and sensory dysfunction, seizures, asthma, sleep disorders, and spasticity are just a few syndromes which can be helped with CST.
Children often respond much more quickly to CST as their nervous system and bodies are more pliable and less restricted than a normal adult’s body after years of stress and injury. The light touch of CST is extremely soothing and can calm the most anxious and hyperactive child or adult. The gentle touch helps build a trusting bond between practitioner and child which helps to create a positive and healthy environment for healing. When appropriate, parents can be taught certain aspects of CST and infant massage to further the healing process and essential bonding between parent and child.
CST has been around for thousands of years and brought more prominently to Western medicine by Dr. John Upledger. It is a remarkable therapy that can help not only children, but also adults suffering from back and neck pain, anxiety, depression, and general life stress. When you see how much it benefits your child, you might just want to try it yourself!
